Who am I?

Just another guy. I live in San Francisco with my wife and stepkids and work at the University of California, San Francisco. (My wife and I grew up in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, and sure miss the warm weather!)

Oddly enough, my background is print production (prepress and layout) and audio engineering (live music engineering and radio station operations), but around 1995 I started dabbling with HTML. My brother sold me on it: "Bro, this Internet thing is going to be HUGE! You should get a head start!" I've been building websites, both good and bad, ever since. I am a recovering tables abuser, but I'm proud to say that I survived FrontPage 98 without ever using the <blink> element!

I branched into Flash development around 2002.

While I do the occasional freelance site for friends, my main focus these days — and full-time job at UCSF — is creating online courses and course delivery systems. I do double duty as an instructional designer and as a web developer.

I hold an MA in Education (Instructional Technologies) from San Francisco State University and a BA in History from the University of Hawaii.

What's the site for?

pipwerks.com is my personal site, dedicated to exploring web technologies for website development and e-learning courseware development. It's where I post my experiments and sometimes write about the things I'm working on, in case other people might find it useful.

I enjoy trying to keep up with web standards and best practices, but I also love playing with the latest web doo-dads and shiny new "Web 2.0" stuff, especially if I can find a way to work it into an eLearning course.
